The coast-road run

The simplest experience to put together and the one most guests end up preferring: west from Marbella along the A-7 towards Estepona with the roof down, a stop at a beach club or the old town, and back along the same road in the evening light. Thirty-five kilometres each way, one afternoon, no planning beyond leaving before the traffic builds.

It works because the road is open and continuous — you actually drive rather than sit in a queue — and because the Mediterranean runs alongside it the whole way. This is the drive to do the day you arrive, before you have settled into the villa and stopped leaving it.

The mountain day to Ronda

The A-397 to Ronda is the set-piece drive of this coast: switchbacks, elevation, the Sierra de las Nieves on either side, and a town with a genuine reason to be there at the end of it. Leave at 08:30, stop at the reservoir viewpoint, spend two hours in Ronda around the El Tajo gorge, and be back for a late lunch.

Total distance is around 100–120 km, which sits comfortably inside the 250 km per day included in every hire. In a convertible, go with the roof down; the elevation makes the air comfortable even in high summer.

The evening drive to Istán or the sunset run

If you only have the car for one evening, do not try to fit a day trip into it. Two alternatives work far better. The first is the A-7175 up to Istán and the Embalse de la Concepción — about 35–40 km round trip, tight and quiet, worth two hours including a stop at the reservoir.

The second is a sunset run west along the coast road and back, timing the return for the last of the light with the roof down. Neither needs a full day and neither will leave you tired at the wheel.

Celebrations, proposals and photoshoots

For those, the car matters less for how it drives than for what it says when it arrives — and the delivery is the service, not the drive.

For a photoshoot, agree the location with us in advance and plan the light: early morning and the hour before sunset are the two windows that work, and both are also the times the roads are at their best if the shoot turns into a drive.

Book the car around the light rather than the hour. On this coast, mornings are for the mountains and late afternoon for the coast road — that single habit is the difference between a drive you remember and a drive in traffic.

And agree the mileage up front if your plan is larger than a day trip. Nothing sours the last hour of a good hire like a kilometre charge nobody mentioned.

What is the best supercar driving experience on the Costa del Sol?

Can I hire a car for just an evening?

You hire by the day, but nothing stops you from collecting in the late afternoon and doing a two-hour drive to Istán or a sunset run along the coast. It is the best use of a single day's hire if you are short on time.

How many kilometres do these drives need?

Istán and back is about 35–40 km. Ronda and back is about 100–120 km. A coastal run to Estepona and back is around 70 km. All of them fit inside one day's included allowance.

Can I combine two drives in one day?

Yes — the classic combination is the Ronda road in the morning and the coast road towards Estepona in the late afternoon, which comes to roughly 150–170 km.
